The WW1 German naval raid on Hartlepool resulted in the death of at least 130 people and the wounding of many more. We were commissioned to design and build an exhibition to mark the anniversary of the Bombardment. Our solution houses 130 ceramic poppies in a large glass case and projects an animation above them. Matching cases house important objects from that day. A touchscreen interactive enables visitors to explore the collection further. Our challenge was to tell a complex story in a small space while creating a fitting memorial to those killed in the raid. The resulting gallery has quickly become one of the museum’s most popular.
